How to make changes to a United Airlines reservation?

Your travel plans have been held up by some unexpected incidents and you need to catch the next flight? Relax.
That kind of thing happens pretty often. We can never let it ruin our vacations. As a matter of fact, changing travel plans is not as awful as you think if you're flying with United Airlines. To make you worry-free, we'd like to unveil how to make changes to a United Airlines reservation online.

Actually, making travel plans with United Airlines can be conveniently done within three steps: change your reservation first, request an E-Ticket refund then and check in for an alternate flight on the same day of travel if necessary. Detailed procedures and info will be explained in the following part.

Change Your Reservation

Make sure that you have presented your Secure Flight information before changing your reservation. And you can add Secure Flight info if necessary. Then you can find your reservation and follow steps to change your flights. To make online changes, you're required to have an E-Ticket.

After changing your reservation, prices difference between the former fare and new fare, service charges and applicable taxes will be assessed and charged through provided form of payment. For nonrefundable tickets, prices difference between the former fare and new fare as well as a $150 administrative fee should be paid. The administrative fees vary to international tickets.

Note that you can't change your Mileage Plus award tickets and Miles & Money Award tickets online. To make changes to your award travel, please contact United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).

Request an E-Ticket Refund

Before submitting your online refund requests, you need to ensure that your ticket is an e-ticket, refundable and used for travel within the U.S. and Canada. Plus, your ticket should be bought with a credit card or U.S. and Canadian currency. And the ticket number should start with 016. An online refund request form needs to be completed afterwards. You'll receive a full refund if your United Airlines reservation has been canceled within 24 hours of purchase. Then you can book a new itinerary for you travel.

Check in for an Alternate Flight on the Same Day of Travel

You can check in for an alternate United or Continental flight on the same day if seats are available. Same day changes can be done through United Reservations by phone, online or at the airport. A $75 fee is to be charged for OnePass Silver and general members. Same-day travel change is free to OnePass Gold, Premier Executive, 1 K and other elite members.
