United Airlines Pet Travel Guidelines

Category: Airline

Travel with your pets? Would you like them to travel as carry-on or in a kennel?
United Airlines has quite strict restrictions on pet travel, which can be affected by destination, season and other related factors. Necessary arrangements should be made ahead of your schedule. Hope you'll get enlightened by browsing through this article.

Have you confirmed the following conditions before applying for pet travel?

As a general rule, there are several conditions to be met before applying for pet travel. For the safety and welfare of your pet, you'd better check the terms in advance. According to USDA, only pets completely weaned and at least 8 weeks old are permitted to bring onboard. A health certificate of your pet is needed no more than 30 days prior to your departure date. If your pets are travelling unaccompanied, they will be transferred via United Cargo. And the health certificate needs to be issued ten days prior to your departure date.

United Airlines has issued a new summer embargo regarding to breed restriction for pet travel.
From June 1 through September 30, short-nosed dog breeds including Boston Terrier, Boxer, English or French Bulldog, King Charles Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Pug Shar-Pei and Shih Tzu are prohibited from travelling as cargo or checked baggage. Yet those dogs can travel with you in the cabin.

Make Advance Arrangement

You need to let United Airlines know that you will travel with your pet at least 24 hours prior to your departure. They can't guarantee a specific flight for your pet though. And they have the right to refuse your application due to extreme temperatures, illness or aggressive behavior of your pets, destination airports, and other reasonable considerations. To make necessary arrangements, you can contact United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).

Pet Travel Tips

To make pet travel as easy as possible, there are some tips that you should bear in mind. Try to avoid holidays, weekends as well as excessively hot or cold days if you're flying with your pets. Nonstop flights are preferred. If you travel in summer, we strongly recommend you to take the morning or evening flights.

For the safety of your pets as well as others, please carry a leash, and post your pet's name as well as owner's telephone number on the kennel. Don't let your pet get out of its kennel when you're inside the airport. Food and water should be offered to your pets within four hours before check-in.
