Carry-on Baggage Policies for United Airlines

It's perfectly normal that we may need to bring a small backpack, briefcase or just a purse for international travel as well as domestic travel.
Experienced travelers always make themselves fully informed of the airlines' carry-on baggage policies before setting out. To save your time and efforts at the airport, we've boiled down the carry-on baggage policies for United Airlines on this page.

Carry-on Baggage Restrictions

According to United Airlines carry-on baggage policies, the size of a carry-on bag should be limited to 9 x 14 x 22 inches (23 x 35 x 56 cm) or 45 linear inches. That is to say, your carry-on bag must be small enough to be stowed in the overhead bin or under your seat. Otherwise your bag might be categorized into checked baggage. And applicable checked baggage fees will be charged.

Personal items like outer garments, umbrellas, assistive devices, infant restraint devices, child safety seats for ticketed children, reading material as well as food and beverages to be consumed onboard won't be reckoned in your carry-on bag and the one personal item limit.

Liquids, Gels and Aerosols Packing Tips

According to the international conventions, liquids, gels and aerosols are allowed to bring onboard as long as they have got through the security checkpoints.
These items are supposed to be contained in a completely sealed liter-sized plastic bag or one clear resealable quart. At the security checkpoints, those plastic bags are to be ex-rayed.

Liquid items such as medications, baby food in containers including milk as well as liquids, juices or gels for diabetic passengers are permitted to bring onboard. The volume is limited to 3 oz. (100 mL). If their volume is more than 3 oz. (100 mL), they must be checked by officials at the security checkpoints.

Location-specific Regulations

The number of checked bags is not limited if you travel within the Middle East or Asia. Yet the total combined weight of checked and carry-on bags is limited to 44 lbs. (20 kg) for United Economy, 66 lbs. (30 kg) for United Business and 88 lbs. (40 kg) for United First. An extra 44 lbs. (20 kg) is permitted for Global Services, 1K, Premier Executive, OnePass Platinum Elite, OnePass Gold Elite and Star Alliance Gold members. A total maximum weight of 140 lbs. (64 kg) is allowed for active U.S. military personnel.

Note that incapacitating powders, sprays and liquids are prohibited by Canadian law. So don't bring capsicum, tear gas, mace, pepper spray and other restricted items if you're traveling to or from Canada.
