United Airlines Baggage Restrictions

Category: Airline

Last-minute packing for your vacation with United Airlines? Take some time to figure out what to bring and what not to.
Out of the consideration for safety, United Airlines is quite strict about both carry-on and checked baggage. To eliminate unnecessary misunderstandings and breeze through the security checkpoints, learn about United's baggage restrictions before leaving for the airport.

Electronic Devices

Electronic devices might interfere with cockpit navigation or communications systems. Thus passengers are not allowed to use electronic devices when the plane is flying below 10,000 feet. Certain electronic devices can't be used during the land and takeoff including portable CD and tape players, handheld computer games, calculators, shavers, portable VCRs/video players and laptop computers/accessory printers/tape drives. Electronic devices cannot be used any time onboard including cellular phones, AM/FM transmitters-receivers, televisions and remote-controlled toys.

If you have to use cellular phones, try to finish the call at the gate before aircraft door is getting closed. Heart pacemakers, watches and hearing aids are permitted to use any time onboard.

Alcoholic Beverage Restrictions

Alcohol transport restrictions and proofs of alcohol vary by customs of various regions and countries.
Glass-bottled alcoholic beverages must be placed in a Styrofoam-type insert, which has been molded to enclose the bottles completely.

Alcoholic beverages with less than 24 percent alcohol by volume (48 proof) can be accepted by United with no limit on amount. Actually, most beer and wine are under 48 proof. Alcoholic beverages with 24 to 70 percent alcohol by volume (48 - 140 proof) are limited to 5 liter each passenger. Alcoholic beverages with over 70 percent alcohol by volume are prohibited from onboard.

For information on alcoholic beverage transported as carry-on baggage, please refer to TSA restrictions on carry-on baggage.

Restricted Articles

According to Transportation Security Administration, potentially dangerous items are not allowed to bring onboard. Restricted articles include poisons, explosives, acid, etiologic agents, radioactive materials, lighter fluid, corrosive materials, irritating or incapacitating sprays, lighters, compressed gases, flammable solids/liquids, oxidizing materials, installed alarm devices, noxious materials, and etc. Devices used for preventing passengers from reclining are prohibited as well. You can refer to TSA's list of prohibited items for a complete list of restricted articles.

Firearms in shipping cases or checked baggage should be unloaded and declared according to Federal regulations. Don't bring firearms in carry-on bags. They can only be placed in a gun case or locked bag as checked baggage. An amount of 11 lbs. small arms ammunition is permitted at most. Dry ice is permitted to bring onboard either as carry-on baggage or checked baggage.
