Air Tran Check-in, Baggage Size & Fees

Airlines are about to receive another round of rush hours as the annual holiday season approaches.
Air Tran, the subsidiary of the Dallas-based Southeast Airlines, has been well-posed to deliver carefree flying experience to each and every smart traveler.

Rest assured with Air Tran, whether you are thinking of retreating to a remote southern beach, or engaging in the bustling New Orleans French Quarter or relish a moment of family reunion.

But first, let's go over the Air Tran passenger requirements, concerning check-in, luggage size and fees.

Check-in

1) Are there any time limits for check-in?

Yes, to ensure a smooth and pleasant travel, you should pay special attention to the time limits of check-in.

• Ticket counter check-in

In compliance with security requirements, Air Tran recommends that passengers arrive at the airport 90 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure of their flight.

Domestic passengers may run the risk of being denied boarding if they and their baggage arrive at the ticket counter less than 45 minutes ahead of schedule. An arrival 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time applies to international travelers.

• Gate check-in

You'd better show up at the flight departure gate no later than 10 minutes prior to the scheduled departure of your flight. If not, there may be a chance that you would lose denied boarding compensation.

2) Can I check in online?

Yes, of course. Feel free to check in using Online Flight Check-in service at airtran.com. This service is open from 24 hours to 45 minutes before the flight's scheduled departure.

3) What if I am traveling with a baby? What If I am a minor traveling alone?

Putting you in the first place, Air Tran offers individual services to special groups like customers traveling with infants and minors traveling alone.

• If you are traveling with an infant:

Air Tran suggests that you seek advice from your physician ahead of traveling if you have infants less than 7 days old go with you.

You are allowed to bring a stroller to the gate for the convenience of walking through the airport. You may get your stroller checked at the gate before boarding and returned to the airport jet way on arriving at the destination.

To add more ease to your traveling, Air Tran allows you to use during cruise flight booster-type child seats, vest and harness-type systems and lap-help child belts.

When traveling with an infant, you are able to bring additional baby-related items like diapers, blanket and baby clothes besides the standard one carry-on item. Air Tran strongly encourages you to carry ample supply of baby care items in case for fear of flight delay. Please note that checked luggage stored in the cargo stowage can't be retrieved before landing, subject to security requirements.

• If you are a minor traveling alone:

Having travelers' safety and pleasure in mind, Air Tran recommends that unaccompanied minors be booked on flights scheduled to arrive at the final destination between 6:00 am and 7:00 pm local time. Unaccompanied minors on any last flight of the day will not be accepted, making sure the Escort on Arrival can meet the kid at their arrival gate in a timely way.

You are defined as an unaccompanied minor is if you are a child at least five years old but less than 12 years old and are not accompanied by a traveler 12 years old or older.

Special care and provisions are prepared to ensure you are protected and attended.

Carry-on and Checked Baggage Policies

1) What kind of carry-on item can I take to the cabin?

For carry-on baggage, the one carry-on item and one personal item policy applies to all travelers.
Garments and musical instruments fall into the aforementioned items. Personal items include handbags, waling sticks, cameras, coats, infant food, umbrellas, reading matter, briefcases and laptop computers.

When in the cabin, for the pleasure of all fellow travelers, please stow your baggage under the seat in front of the passenger or in an approved overhead bin.

Assistive devices such as canes, walkers, crutches capable of fitting in overhead bins or underneath seats are allowed and will not count toward your carry-on limit.

2) Is there anything that I am forbidden to bring with me?

In accordance with requirements set by Transportation Administration (TSA), Air Tran passengers are prohibited from transporting these items: printer, cartridges weighing 16 ounces or more and so on. You can review the security rules to learn more about specific items permitted or not permitted.

3) What are the standard dimensions for carry-on baggage?

A carry-on bag should not exceed 24'' long + 18'' wide + 13" tall for a total combined linear measurement of 55 inches. Please note that there are alternations in the carry-on limit: 24" long + 16" wide + 10" tall effective March, 1, 2012.

In order to make your personal item such as a briefcase, a laptop or a purse to fit under the seat in front of the passenger, please ensure that it must not exceed 17" long + 12" wide + 8.5" tall.

4) How about the time scale for baggage check-in?

Air Tran recommends that you arrive at the airport 90 minutes before the scheduled departure of your flight.

If you are booked on domestic flights, your baggage will not be accepted at the ticket counter less than 45 minutes before the scheduled departure of your flight and less than 60 minutes if on international flights.

5) How much will I be charged for my baggage?

All baggage charges are one-way for each fare-paying traveler. For the full details of Air Tran baggage allowance, check out the following section.

• First checked bag

The charge for a first checked bag in coach class is 20 dollars with size and weight limit.

Military members traveling on active duty orders are able to benefit from the exception exclusively made for them. Their baggage will be exempt from Air Tran's baggage limit and will not be subject to excess, oversized or overweight baggage charges as long as each piece of baggage does not exceed 100 pounds in weight and 80 inches in size.

The use of a wheelchair may not be considered part of the passenger's baggage count and can be checked as baggage at no charge.

• Second checked Bag

The charge for a second checked bag is 25 dollars for all coach class reservations.

• Excess baggage

For other than sporting equipment, the excess baggage charge is 50 dollars for each piece after the first two bags. Effective April 10, 2012, your third to ninth checked bag will be charged at 50 dollars per piece and bags and items thereafter will be 110 dollars per piece.

• Overweight baggage

Overweight baggage rates are based on weight: 49 dollars for bags weighing 51 to 70 pounds and 79 dollars for bags weighing 71 to 100 pounds. Bags weighing over 100 pounds will be denied boarding.

• Oversize baggage

Oversize baggage rates are based on overall dimensions: 49 dollars for bags with dimensions from 62 to 70 inches and 79 dollars for bags with dimensions from 71 to 80 inches. Baggage with dimensions over 80 inches will not be accepted.
