Allegiant Air Check in and Baggage Size & Fees

Category: Carry On Luggage Size, Airline Baggage Fees, Airline Check-In

Founded in 1997, Allegiant Air is a U.S. low-cost airline with the corporate headquarters in Enterprise, Nevada, near Las Vegas.
The airline, with a fleet of MD-82/83 and MD-87 aircraft, offers nonstop scheduled service to 75 destinations throughout the United States. Allegiant also has authority for charter service across the United Sates, Mexico, Canada and Cuba. Its charter customers could be a film production corporation, a collegiate athletic organization and others.

Actually, Allegiant lays primary emphasis on leisure travelers, especially on those in colder northern climates who are traveling to seasonal warm-weather destinations such as Tampa Bay, Las Vegas, Orlando or Phoenix. With low fares and non-stop, all-jet service, Allegiant Air makes travel affordable and convenient.

You have purchased a plane ticket with Allegiant Air and are ready to fly. But not so fast! There are specific guidelines and restrictions you need to follow, including check-in procedure and baggage size and fees.

How to check in with Allegiant Air?

In the past, the only way to check in for flights was in person at the airline's ticket counter. During peak times like weekends or holidays, this would often involve standing in a long queue and snaking around the terminal. Fortunately, today there is a convenient alternative, designed to save time and make the process far easier - checking in online. As a favorite airline, Allegiant Air of course offers its passengers this convenient alternative.

1. Check in online: Allegiant Air allows its passengers to check in online from 24 hours to 1 hour prior to the scheduled departure time. However, this method is only available for passengers who bought pre-selected seats. Be noted that pre-purchase seat assignments are available both online and at the airport on the day of travel, with a nominal fee of $11 per person, per segment. For those with baggage to check, they can check in online and then proceed to the Baggage Check Counter when arriving at the airport.

2. Check in at the airport: If you are not a purchaser of pre-selected seat, you can only check in at the airport. Look for the Allegiant Air's ticket counter at your departure airport and hand over your baggage. Then, you will receive a boarding pass before you can proceed to board your plane.

When to arrive at the airport for your flight?

Actually, it's your responsibility to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to complete all ticketing, baggage check and security clearance procedures and to get to the gate ready to board. According to Allegiant, passengers are recommended to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time. Passengers must check in at least 45 minutes before departure, otherwise, the Allegiant ticket counter closes.

If your seat assignment is pre-purchased, you are required to be at the gate area no less than 45 minutes before departure. This ensures your seat assignment or your seat selection will be forfeited. For those who don't buy a seat assignment, they will be assigned to open seating after passengers in the pre-boarding group and passengers with pre-purchased seat assignments have been aboard.

As for open seating, numbers are usually assigned on a first-come-first serve basis. However, there are some exceptions. For instance, some departure airports would print seat numbers on the boarding pass, while others may print numbers on a separate card which will be distributed to passengers at check-in.

Note: Be sure not to make a late check-in. If you have a late check-in, Allegiant cannot assure that your baggage will travel with you. Additionally, the airline will not assume liability for damage, delivery charges or consequential expenses incurred by your baggage's failure to arrive on the same flight as you traveled.

Even worse, if you have a late check-in and your bags don't arrive on the flight with you, your baggage will not be delivered to you.

What to know about Allegiant Air's baggage requirements?

Take all your travel essentials with you in a suitcase, backpack or similar piece of luggage on your next trip. Like most American airline carriers, Allegiant Air imposes various regulations, rules and guidelines concerning the use of baggage to make sure both your safety and the property transit of your baggage. Failure to comply with airlines' baggage requirements would incur extra money in fees or inability to bring your baggage with you.

1. What about carry-on baggage?

Allegiant allows passengers to bring one carry-on bag. The exterior dimensions for this piece cannot exceed 45 linear inches or 115 centimeters. To be more exact, your carry-on bag is no larger than 9" H x 14" W x 22" D or 23cm H x 36cm W x 56cm D. This measurement includes wheels, pockets, handles and decorations. The bag must be capable of being stowed under your seat or in the overhead compartment.

In addition to a carry-one bag, Allegiant passengers are also allowed to bring one personal item onto the plane. Examples of personal items include purse, briefcase, laptop computer, camera case and diaper bag. The maximum exterior dimension of a personal item is 44 liner inches or 112 centimeters. In other words, the personal item cannot exceed: 9" H x 16" W x 19" D or 23cm H x 41cm W x 49cm D. This measurement contains wheels, pockets, handles and decorations.

2. What about checked baggage?

Passengers flying with Allegiant Air are allowed to carry up to 5 pieces of checked luggage. Each piece cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight and 80 linear inches in dimensions. Be noted that Allegiant doesn't accept any baggage more than 100 pounds.

How much should be paid for checked baggage?

Most airlines are looking for ways to maximize their revenues, and Allegiant Air is no exception. Allegiant, like most U.S airlines, imposes fees on every checked bag. The fees for checked baggage are non-refundable and calculated per bag per flight segment. However, it is cheaper to pay for a checked bag when buying your ticket than paying at flight check-in. So, make sure to plan ahead if checking a bag.

First 2 checked bags: a fee up to $34.99 each (depending on routes) when paying at time of purchasing ticket; otherwise $35 each

Additional checked bags: $50 per bag (fees for additional bags can only be collected at time of check-in.)

NOTE: Baggage fee doesn't apply to mobility aids, car seats / strollers and assistive devices. The fees for sporting items will be assessed at the departure airport.

Is there any extra fee applied to overweight / oversize baggage?

Yes, of course! Realize that the above-mentioned fees only apply to baggage within required size and weight limit. Any overweight / oversize baggage will bring about an extra fee. The fee applies to the following conditions:

Overweight Bags: $50 per bag which weighs 51 to 70 pounds

Overweight Bags: $75 per bag which weighs 71 to 100 pounds

Oversize Bags: $75 per bag which is larger than 80 liner inches
