Hawaiian Airlines Check in, Baggage Size and Fees

Category: Carry On Luggage Size, Airline Baggage Fees, Airline Check-In

Founded in 1929 under the name Inter-Island Airways, Hawaiian Airlines is the 11th largest commercial airline in the USA and the largest airline based in the state of Hawaii.
Hawaiian Airlines has never had a fatal accident in its entire history and created a record of transporting 8.3 million passengers in 2009. It has won the heart of passengers thanks to its commitment to high security and hearty service. Nowadays it carries over 8,000,000 passengers each year. If you take the flights from Hawaiian Airlines, you should follow all the check-in rules and baggage information in order to board as quickly and safely as possible.

Part 1 - Check-in

There're generally two types of check-in available, online check-in and traditional airport check-in. Passenger can choose any one according to their actual needs.

1 Online Check-in

Hawaiian Airlines allows any passenger to check in up to 24 hours before the departures of his flights through its web check-in service. As long as you have got an internet connection, a laptop and a printer, you will complete this check-in procedure smoothly. There're several requirements for passengers who want to check in online.

A. Passengers may check in 24 hours in advance and no less than 90 minutes prior to departure.

B. Passenger should travel within the neighbor lands or between the Hawaii and the American mainland.

C. People should have an electronic ticket for a confirmed reservation.

D. Online check-in is unavailable to passengers with certain special needs, including unaccompanied minor.

If passengers want to use online check-in service but have baggage to check, they can print their boarding pass at home and drop their bags at the Hawaiian Airlines Check-in counter at the airport before the deadline.

2 Airport Check-in

There're still many passengers who prefer checking in at the airport. They should make clearly the detailed information about check-in time.

2.1 Recommended Check-in Time

Because TSA security screening check point waiting time may be long, passengers are recommended to arrive at the airport early. Hawaiian Airlines recommends that passengers who travel between Hawaii and continental USA check in at least 2.5 hours prior to departure and passengers who travel wholly within the State of Hawaii 90 minutes before the scheduled departure. International passengers are recommended to check in three hours before the department.

Passengers are unable to check in at the airport prior to 3 hours before the departure and can't check in earlier than the operating hours of airport ticket counters located within Hawaii.

Also note that:

A. Passengers traveling within Neighbor islands should be checked in and given a boarding pass no later than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

B. Passengers traveling between Hawaii and North America have to check in and get a boarding pass at least 45 minutes prior to the departure.

C. For passengers of international flights, they should be checked in and issued a boarding pass 60 minutes ahead before the scheduled departure.

2.2 Required Boarding Gate Time

Passengers must be present at the boarding gate for boarding at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the flights.
If any one fails, although he/she has ready been checked in at the designated area for check-in, he/she can't board.

2.3 Required Ticketing Time

Passengers are required to purchase tickets at least 120 minutes prior to the schedules departure, otherwise, Hawaiian Airlines will cancel reservations of tickets which have not yet been purchased.

Part 2 - Carry-on and Checked Baggage

1 Carry-on Baggage

To ensure that all your baggage will be checked in smoothly, you should make clearly what you can take as carry-on luggage.

1.1 What Can Be Taken as Carry-on Baggage?

All the ticketed passengers are limited to one carry-on bag and one personal item, such as purse, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack and so on. Items, like camera, books and accessories may be brought aboard as personal items excluded from the item limit at no additional fee. For carry-on liquids, Hawaiian Airlines adopts the 3-1-1 Rule administered by the TSA. It requires passengers to divide liquids into3.4 ounce bottles, which will be placed into 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic zip-top bag per person.

For the ticketed adult passenger who travels with a child and needs a medical assistive device, such as seats, bassinets, walkers, crutches, infant carrying seats or stroller, these items can be checked or accepted as additional carry-on baggage without any charge as long as they fit in the overhead compartment or stowed beneath the seat in front of him. Passengers also have the option to put the item in cargo without any additional charge. There's no baggage allowance for infants held in an adult passenger's lap.

The overhead compartments are on a first-come-first serve basis for all passengers. When your item is unable to be safely stored under the seat in front of you or in the overhear compartment, or storage areas are full, Hawaiian Airlines reserves the right to check your carry on luggage into cargo.

1.2 How the Fees Are Charged for Oversized Baggage?

For each passenger, size limitation of carry on luggage is 45 linear inches, with a recommended maximum size of 22 inches in height, 14 inches in length, and 9 inches in depth. Weight limitation of carry on luggage is 25 pounds or 11.5 kilograms. If any item exceeds 50 pounds (23 kg) or 62 linear inches (157 linear cm), an additional Excess Size charge will be allowed with a fee. Items which exceed 70 pounds and 80 linear inches are prohibited.

2 Checked Baggage

Baggage should be checked by Hawaiian Airlines at the airport from which the passengers take the flights and in advance of the flight departure time.

2.1 How the Fees Are Charged for Checked Baggage?

If passengers travel between Hawaii and the United States or North America, $25 is charge for the first checked bag, $35 for the second one, $125 for the third, fourth, fifth and sixth one and $200 for the seventh or more one. Passengers flying among the neighbor islandsare charged $17 per carry on bag for the first and second one and $25 for the third, four or more one. International passengers are charged $0 for first and second checked bag and a set amount of money for the third or more one, according to their destinations.

Passenger can pay all baggage fees with a credit card using a web check-in or self-service check-in kiosks at the airport, or at the airport check-in counter with a credit card, cash or check.

2.2 Who Will Check His First and Second Baggage at No Charges?

Passengers who fly in first class and hold the membership of Premier Club and Pualani Platinum and Gold club receive complimentary first and second checked bags. Customers traveling from/to international destinations, corporate members and customers traveling on government or military fares are exempt from the first and second check-in luggage charges. People who have got Coach Plus ticket, members of the US military, and those who have the same itinerary as other exempted guests, don't need to pay fees for their first and second checked baggage.
