JetBlue Check-in and Baggage Size & Fee

Category: Carry On Luggage Size, Airline Baggage Fees, Airline Check-In

JetBlue Airways Corporation, a non-union airline headquartered in Queens, NYC, is a low cost airline in America as well as the country's highest rated airline according to Skytrax.
Established at the end of the 20th century, JetBlue began a focus city operation in 2001 at Long Beach Airport in California and other airports. As of December, 2011, it serves 71 destinations in 22 states (including Puerto Rico), and eleven countries in the Caribbean, South America and Latin America though its main service area is in the United States.

What Should I Know When Checking in with JetBlue Airline?

JetBlue boasts different check-in options at varied airports and the check in times also vary with airport. This makes it necessary for you to check specific airport for the available check-in options and required check-in time.

1) Online Check-in

When using online check-in service, you can check in for flight 24 hours prior to scheduled departure and the check-in process for each flight must be gone through separately. This service is always available whether you buy tickets online or through travel agency as long as you have a confirmed reservation for a future domestic flight and know the departure city and 6-digit JetBlue confirmation number. Log in, assign your seat and print the boarding pass - couldn't be easier!

Of course, not all people are eligible to use JetBlue online check-in service. For those meeting the following criteria, they may have to check in at a JetBlue ticket counter:

• Traveling with a pet

• Traveling on a group reservation in a party of 10 or more

• Standby customers who do not have a confirmed reservation

• Unaccompanied minors

• Customers who have requested additional assistance upon check in

• Customers who have purchased an extra seat

• Customers bringing an extra bag or extra baggage on their flight

• Customers traveling with a service animal

This check-in option allows you to check in for JetBlue flights at home or office, which is simple, fast and secure. Besides, you can also enjoy the priority of assigning, confirming and changing seat before going to the airport.

2) Remote Check-in

Remote check-in is a new JetBlue service to help passengers save time and avoid the inconvenient baggage haul at the airport. It is available in hotels, convention centers, on-airport and off-airport parking areas, rental car areas and onboard cruise ships in a growing number of cities, so that travelers can check in, obtain boarding passes and drop baggage for airport delivery for hours beforehand. This service is carried out together with a dedicated airline service company called BAGS, Inc.

To use this service, you are required to visit a JetBlue Remote Check-In property two to four hours prior to your flight and pay $0-$20 service fee (both time and fee are depending on the location), then you can check in and let your baggage taken directly to the airport to be boarded on your flight. However, remote check-in is only available in restricted places despite its rapid expansion, so that you need to check back before your next trip.

3) Kiosk Check-in

Kiosk check-in is currently available in all domestic BlueCities and certain international BlueCities. It is available as long as you have a confirmed reservation. You can check in using confirmation number, TrueBlue log in and TrueBlue number, or by scaning the itinerary barcode.

Remember to check in 30 minutes to 4 hours prior to departure if you are checking baggage, and if you have no checked baggage, you can check in within 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure time.

4) Curbside Check-in

This allows passengers to bypass the service counter and drop their checked baggage outside. "Cashless Curbside" has been implemented in all curbside cities and only credit card is accepted for transactions. Curbside check-in is available for $2 per bag and no fee at all if you are checking in without any baggage.

5) Ticket Counter Check-in

Ticket counter check-in is the most traditional method.
Wherever you are going/from, ticket counter service is always available. Besides check-in, you can also get info on everything related to your flight directly from the airport staff. But it is very likely for you to encounter long queues, especially during holidays.

Other requirements related to check-in: For domestic travelers, a US federal or state-issued photo ID is required as long as you are over 18. A valid passport is required for passengers to/from the United States and the Western Hemisphere. International travelers need to check in at the ticket counter.

What Is JetBlue Carry-on Baggage Requirement?

Each JetBlue passenger can take one bag that fits in the overhead bin. For Airbus A320, the bag should not exceed 26 inches length x 18 inches width x 12 inches height, and for EMBRAER, the requirement is 24"l x 16"w x 10"h. One personal item smaller than 17"l x 12.5"w x 8"h can also be taken onboard. At present, JetBlue doesn't set any limit on the weight of carry-on bags on neither domestic nor international flights, but you need to make sure your bag is of average size so as to be placed in the overhead bin. You are advised NOT to take garment bags on JetBlue flight.

Medicines, like prescription and OTC medications, can also be taken onboard JetBlue flight in carry-on bag. However, if these items are heavier than 3.4 ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, the owner must declare it at the security checkpoint for further inspection, which will be pretty troublesome.

You are also eligible to take special items like crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs and infant car seats if you have infants with you. These special items are in addition to the carry-on item and can be put in the overhead compartment. Though there is no limit to the amount of such assistive devices you can bring, they are subject to carry-on size and weight restrictions. But for all carry-on items, JetBlue assumes no liability for loss, damage or spoilage.

Make sure no explosive, sharp objects or loose liquid is mistakenly packed in your bag, or you will be caught in great trouble, particularly at such a time when terrorism is so rampant.

How Much Baggage Can I Take?

JetBlue, like all the other airlines, offers a free baggage allowance. You can take one bag free of charge with JetBlue as long as the bag doesn't exceed 62 inches in overall dimensions and weighs less than 50 pounds.

JetBlue will also charge extra fees for overweight, oversized baggage and excess bags, just as any other airlines. Fees will be assessed for each category that applies. For example, if a third bag is both overweight and oversized, you will pay overweight, oversized and excess fees. The detailed guidelines are as follows:

Overweight bags: $50 per bag for bags between 51-70 pounds, $100 for bags between 70-99 pounds. And bags over 99 pounds are not accepted by JetBlue.

Oversized bags:$75 per bag for bags between 63-80 inches. Bags larger than 80 inches won't be accepted

Second bag: as per March 2nd, 2011, an additional fee of $35 is charged for checking a second bag for reservation. The oversized and overweight fees are charged still.

Third or more bags: passengers checking three or more bags on JetBlue flights will be charged $75 per bag and the $30 charge for your first extra bag will also be charged.

Special rules also exist in certain circumstance. For instance, you can take at most two checked bags when flying to and from the Dominican Republic, and no overweight or oversized baggage will be accepted in this country. Boxes will be accepted as checked or carry-on baggage on domestic flights only and they won't be permitted for international travel.

JetBlue can also transport specific items such as sporting equipment, firearms, musical instruments and medical assist items. Some items, like surfboard or piano, will be charged a fixed handling fee owing to size, fragility and other factors while others can be checked in lieu of your checked bags. You need to confirm packing regulations and fees with JetBlue over and over again. All your baggage, both carry-ons and checked ones, must comply with TSA and FAA regulations.

For JetBlue domestic flights, checked baggage won't be accepted 4 hours and no less than 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure time. The airline won't be held liable for any charges incurred for late-checked baggage. The cut-off time for checking in for international flights is no later than 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure and all customers must be in the gate area 20 minutes beforehand.

Note: The above info only applies to JetBlue-operated flights and does not apply to codeshare or interline flights.
