KLM Check-in and Baggage Size & Fee

Category: Carry On Luggage Size, Airline Baggage Fees, Airline Check-In

KLM, or Royal Dutch Airlines, is a Netherlands flag carrier airline headquartered in Amstelveen near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
As the world's oldest airline still operating under its original name, KLM offers scheduled passenger and cargo services to 90 destinations throughout the world. Its merger with Air France in May 2004 doesn't mean the end of KLM. Instead, this airline still operates under its own brand.

How & When Should I Check in?

Checking in on time is a safe way to start a journey and KLM offers many check-in options to guarantee that you are on board the plane in time. Different check-in options come with different available time.

Check-in online: You can check in anywhere as long as you have access to computer, which could help you avoid the queues at the check-in desk. By entering the ticket number and flight number, you can log in and make online check-in for you and others in your party. Then you can proceed to reserve the seat of your choice and print out the boarding passes. Electronic boarding passes are available on many routes through smartphone, PDA, Blackberry or mobile phone with Internet access. Online check-in service will be open 30 hours before scheduled departure time and close 1 hour before that.

Check-in with mobile phone: In case there is no computer nearby, you can also check in using mobile phone to save time and trouble. Log in, choose your seat and print the documents - the same procedure with check-in online. The rules, available time and baggage check-in are also equivalent to that of online check-in.

Check-in at the airport: For those who are unable to check in online, there are many self-service check-in machines at the airport so that they can still check in within a couple of easy steps. First insert your passport or frequent flyer card, or enter your e-ticket number or booking code to get the reservation info and then select seat, or buy a seat in the Economy Comfort zone, a seat with extra legroom, or a seat in a row of 2. Now you can print your boarding pass. In case you have any check-in baggage, just hand it over at the nearest baggage drop-off point, and proceed to the gate.

Remember to check in 2 hours before the scheduled departure time and the service will be unavailable 30 minutes (Europe) or 60 minutes (intercontinental) before your departure. For passengers leaving from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, check-in machines are available anytime on the day of departure.

How Much Luggage Can I Bring?

Airport passengers are prone to take more luggage than do train passengers, which is particularly true for international travelers. However, no airline will let you take as many things as you want to. They all have rules for the number, weight and dimensions of your check-in baggage, and if your baggage exceeds the allowed amount, extra fees will be charged. KLM is no exception to these rules.

KLM offers different baggage allowance for different tickets and in different areas. For example:

Economy class: 1 item of check-in baggage, each max. 23 kg (50.5 lbs), max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h.

Business class: 2 items of check-in baggage, each max. 32 kg (70.5 lbs), max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h.

Flying Blue Silver, Gold and Platinum members and SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members:+1 item of check-in baggage, max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h, and max. 23 kg (50.5 lbs) in Economy Class, max. 32 kg (70.5 lbs) in Business Class.

For people flying to and from certain areas of Caribbean, Indian Ocean, South America, Africa and French Polynesia: 2 pieces of check-in baggage, each max. 23 kg (50.5 lbs), max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h.

Passengers with a child younger than 2 years can also carry the following things free of charge:

• One piece of check-in baggage with items for baby care, not exceeding 10kg

• A fully collapsible stroller or pram.

• One piece of hand baggage with essential baby care articles not exceeding 10 kg (22 lbs) and no larger than 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.5 x 13.5 x 10 inches).

• Their own car/child seat on board if they have booked a seat for the child.

If you are traveling to and from the United States, special attention should be paid to your baggage since United States authorities will check baggage thoroughly and pretty closely for explosives.
Never take in your baggage on board printers or toner cartridges weighing 453 grams or more - this is the new rule. What's more, you are not permitted to lock your hold baggage owing to the need to inspect baggage for explosives.

What If My Baggage Overweighs?

The baggage you take on top of the standard amount is called excess baggage, which is subject to extra fees based on the number of pieces, weight and dimensions of your baggage. The excess baggage will be transported as freight by Air France-KLM Cargo. Besides, if you want to transport special baggage, sports equipment, musical instruments and pets, this freight service is also available as long as you make reservations at least 48 hours before departure.

As to the fee for excess baggage and special baggage, it differs per flight. According to KLM, the world can be divided into four zones and each zone has its own standard airport fees, so that you need to determine which zone you are in before deciding the fee to pay for. By the way, you can arrange for the extra pieces of baggage online at a 20% discount or more:

1) when booking your flight

2) via Manage my Booking

3) when you check in online

However, discount won't be available if you are departing from United States, Australia, Cyprus, The Czech Republic, France, Germany (Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt), Hungary or the Ireland with KLM. In fact, you can only arrange your extra baggage at the airport in the above places.

For oversized or overweight baggage or for special baggage you can only make arrangements at the airport, since the fee will be measured according to the size, weight and property of the baggage and the measurement could only be done after the airport staff sees the baggage. Don't forget to contact KLM 48 hours before departure.
