What are the check-in options offered at Lufthansa?

To maximize your check-in convenience and efficiency, Lufthansa offers four check-in options. Choose from:

• Online check-in

From as early as 23 hours prior to departure, you can check in online at the comfort of your home or the office, selecting your seat or printing out your online boarding pass.

Quick boarding: Save every minute of your valuable time with your online boarding pass. Lufthansa makes it possible to process directly to security and then to the gate if you are traveling with hand luggage only. For additional luggage, you can have it checked in at one of the designed Lufthansa baggage drop-off counters.

• Machine check-in

There are three options at the check-in machine, which are displayed on the machine's start screen.

Miles & More card, customer card and credit card check-in: Simply insert these cards in the new machines equipped with the RFID card reader.

Machine-readable ID card and passport check-in: Place either of the cards on the Check-in machine's scanner. Then enter your flight number, destination or booking reference.

Screen-touch check-in: Touch the screen and enter your last name and the booking reference for your flight.

If you have done the check-in and would like to make changes, all you have to do is to place your boarding pass down on the machine's scanner.

Check-in with baggage: To further save your precious time, Lufthansa has set a long number of baggage drop-off counters where you can directly hand in your baggage once the check-in process is done.

• Late night check-in

Especially popular with groups and travelers with children or much luggage, late night check-in is possible for all flights operated by Lufthansa or one of its regional partners.

Notice: 1) Check in your baggage at a check-in counter or check-machine and choose your seat the evening before your flight. Then you will receive your boarding pass and you can go directly to your departure gate the next day.

2) In exceptional circumstances, you can only check in at the check-in counter with a coach class ticket. But still, you are able to check in online, via your phone or a check-in machine at the airport.

3) Late night check-in for flights heading to North America (USA, Canada, Mexico) is not available because of security concerns.

4) Late night check-in for groups is only available if the accompanying tourist guide is present at the time of check-in. The guide in question has to prove his identity with an official document with a picture.

5) Late night check-in is possible for smaller groups such as families, couples, several persons known to each other. One member of the group is asked to progress the check-in if he carries all ID documents of the rest of the group.

6) Animals can only be checked in on the day of departure.

• Lufthansa eFly services for economy class passengers

For flights in Lufthansa Economy Class, Lufthansa has especially designed the Lufthansa eFly services in place of the traditional check-in counters. With eFly services, you are able to check in for your flight and choose a seat simply online.

How the regulations for baggage size and weight work?

It is in your interests that Lufthansa strongly encourages you to follow the regulations for baggage size and weight.

For First and Business Class passengers, you are allowed to take two pieces of hand luggage and your personal belongings with you. One piece of hand luggage per person applies to Economic Class.

Please note the baggage size: A piece of hand luggage should not be larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20 cm and may not weigh over 8 kg. As an exception, foldable garment bags count as hand luggage up to a size of 57cm x 54cm x 15cm.

Items of baggage exceeding these limits will be carried to the cargo hold. Make sure you remove any valuables (laptop, mobile phone, PDA, jewelry, documents or identity papers) from your hand luggage if it has to be carried to the cargo hold.
